Fact Sheet:

Access to Health Care

 

1.      Approximately 39% of the Latino non-elderly population in Washington, D.C. is uninsured.

 

2.      Latinos constitute only approximately 2% of Medicaid enrollment in the District of Columbia.

 

3.      The proportion of bilingual employees at the Income Maintenance Administration – the entity that determines eligibility for Medical benefits – has increased from 9% to 14% from 1995 to 2000.

 

4.      The new DC-Washington Alliance for Community Health has eight locations designated to accept enrollees in the program and provide prescriptions. Only one of those locations is in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., where the majority of Latinos live.

 

5.      Approximately 97% of Latinos rely on community-based providers that are oriented toward the specific needs of Latinos.
