The first
construction phase of the emergency shelter for the homeless of the Community
for Creative Non-Violence is on schedule and is expected to be completed by
Dec. 22.
CCNV leader Mitch
Snyder, who staged a hunger strike to get the Reagan administration to provide
$6.5 million to renovate the shelter, said that 700 homeless people are living
in a section of the shelter at 425 Second St. NW. CCNV is planning to house
about 1,100 homeless people during the winter months.
The renovation will make it possible for the center to provide a comprehensive medical clinic, mental health services and a dental clinic. More than$2 million is needed to complete the renovation.
